Lutheran Church Charities operates with a policy where 100% of the money donated to a specific need, goes toward that need. The transaction costs will be paid by LCC administrative funds, not from a percentage off of the donation.

Non-Designated gifts will be applied toward the most urgent need.

Donations

Electronic Funds Transfer

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has programs that enable donors to contribute by electronic funds transfer. This ongoing, systematic and consistent giving can help sustain the organization by providing steady revenues. With electronic funds transfer, there are no lost or forgotten donations, the donor controls the frequency and amount of transfers, withdrawals and changes are made only with donor approval. Personal information is kept strictly confidential and there are no fees for the service.
Please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at (866) 455-6466 for an application form for this program.

Matching Gifts

A corporate matching gift program can multiply the value of a gift to Lutheran Church Charities. These programs allow employees to direct their employer's charitable giving to the benefit of LCC. The human resources or employee benefits office should know if the company will match gifts. Donors may also qualify for a matching gift program from their former employer, their spouse's current or former employer or the company on whose board they serve.

Appreciated Securities

Gifts of appreciate stock, mutual funds or other securities are a quick, easy way to support Lutheran Church Charities. The donation of stock which has been held for more than one year will qualify for a deduction of the stock's entire market value and no capital gains taxes will be due.

To avoid the costs associated with processing gifts of stock and bond certificates, please consider the following method of donating to Lutheran Church Charities.

Please inform Lutheran Church Charities when securities have been transferred to our account to allow us to verify the receipt of the securities and promptly acknowledge the donation.

Securities that are held in book-entry can be delivered electronically to Lutheran Church Charities using the following Depository Trust Company (DTC) delivery information:
Harris Bank and Trust
DTC #0443
Re: Lutheran Church Charities
Account #NKV005006
"Donor Name"
When directing a broker to deliver securities via DTC, please instruct them to contact the following representative of our custodian, Harris Trust and Savings Bank, prior to delivery: Dale Stern or one of Harris Banks agents at 847-654-8712 Or Harris Sales and Service Center at 877-225-3863 Opt #3.

A broker should be able to deposit a stock or bond certificate into DTC for a donor's account. DTC is a book-entry system which facilitates the timely, accurate delivery of securities and automatically credits income to an account on the payable date. Once a broker has deposited a stock or bond certificate to DTC on a donor's behalf, the security can be delivered electronically using the information provided above.

If not using a broker, please send stock or bond certificates to Lutheran Church Charities re-registered either: 1) in negotiable form, registered in the donor's name with Stock Power attached or with the donor's signature on the back of the security and designation of Lutheran Church Charities as the assignee, or 2) in the name of "Pershing LLC", the nominee name of our custodian. This will facilitate the deposit of the securities into DTC. All physical staff transfers must have Medallion guarantee.

Book entry donations are valued on the date of receipt in our account and are based on the Hi and LO average for that day. If the donation is a certificate re-registered in the name of Lutheran Church Charities, the date on the certificate is used. If the certificate is signed over to Lutheran Church Charities and mailed, the postmark date is used. Mutual funds will be valued at the net asset value on the day of the transfer.

For more information, please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at 866-455-6466.

Real Estate

Gifts of appreciated real estate, such as undeveloped land, farms, or personal residences may be transferred by deed to Lutheran Church Charities with no liability for income or estate taxes on the appreciation. The donation of property owned more than one year will qualify for the deduction of the property's appraised value and no capital gains will be due.

For more information, please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at 866-455-6466.

Tangible Personal Property

Tangible personal property includes assets that can be touched or moved, e.g., jewelry, rare coins, stamps, etc. A gift of tangible personal property to Lutheran Church Charities can generate a charitable tax deduction; however, there are IRS regulations regarding the deduction.

The property must be put to a use related to Lutheran Church Charities mission to qualify the full market value of the asset as a charitable deduction. Otherwise the deduction is limited to the cost of the asset.

For more information, please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at 866-455-6466.

Conditions for Deductions for Electronic Charitable Contributions in 2009

Contributions are deductible in the year made; thus, donations charged to a credit card before the end of the year count for 2009. This is true even if the credit card bill is not paid until next year. Also, checks count for 2009 as long as they are mailed this year.

Frank Sommerville, JD, CPA, further clarifies the rule: "The credit card rule allows you to deduct charged donations on the date the credit card is charged, not the date the charity receives the funds. a similar rule would apply to debit cards."

Special Charitable Contributions for Certain IRA Owners

This provision, currently scheduled to expire at the end of 2009, offers older owners of individual retirement accounts (IRAs) a different way to give to charity. An IRA owner, age 70½ or over, can directly transfer tax-free up to $100,000 per year to an eligible charity. This option, created in 2006, is available for distributions from IRAs, regardless of whether the owners itemize their deductions. Distributions from employer-sponsored retirement plans, including SIMPLE IRAs and simplified employee pension (SEP) plans, are not eligible.

To qualify, the funds must be contributed directly by the IRA trustee to the eligible charity. Amounts so transferred are not taxable and no deduction is available for the transfer.

Not all charities are eligible. For example, donor-advised funds and supporting organizations are not eligible recipients.

Amounts transferred to a charity from an IRA are counted in determining whether the owner has met the IRA’s required minimum distribution. Where individuals have made nondeductible contributions to their traditional IRAs, a special rule treats transferred amounts as coming first from taxable funds, instead of proportionately from taxable and nontaxable funds, as would be the case with regular distributions. See Publication 590, Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), for more information on qualified charitable distributions.

Rules for Clothing and Household Items

To be deductible, clothing and household items donated to charity generally must be in good used condition or better. A clothing or household item for which a taxpayer claims a deduction of over $500 does not have to meet this standard if the taxpayer includes a qualified appraisal of the item with the return. Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances and linens.

Guidelines for Monetary Donations

To deduct any charitable donation of money, regardless of amount, a taxpayer must have a bank record or a written communication from the charity showing the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution. Bank records include canceled checks, bank or credit union statements, and credit card statements. Bank or credit union statements should show the name of the charity, the date, and the amount paid. Credit card statements should show the name of the charity, the date, and the transaction posting date.

Donations of money include those made in cash or by check, electronic funds transfer, credit card and payroll deduction. For payroll deductions, the taxpayer should retain a pay stub, a Form W-2 wage statement or other document furnished by the employer showing the total amount withheld for charity, along with the pledge card showing the name of the charity.

These requirements for the deduction of monetary donations do not change the long-standing requirement that a taxpayer obtain an acknowledgment from a charity for each deductible donation (either money or property) of $250 or more. However, one statement containing all of the required information may meet both requirements.

Reminders
