Because of your Donations Two of 10 Students have Received Scholarships

The National Lutheran Church of Myanmar is trying to change this and needs your help to sponsor children in the 11th grade (the final step prior to University). Because of your generous donations two children have already received scholarships. LCC received the following email from Rev. Charles Edwards:

Greetings from Myanmar. In our church there are many students but in grade 11 (entrance control by the government directly) there are 10 students. They are very clever but they are from the very poorest families. Their parents can not support them due to their poverty. Our church is trying to give scholarships but we are also facing and struggling for finical difficulties. Two months ago Lutheran Church Charities(LCC) gave scholarship to 2 students and they are now studying hard. Our church decided to send a prayer request to all our connections. Please pray for them. Our church believes that through your faithful prayers God will certainly help them in wonderful ways. Again, please pray for them.

Medical clinic in KenyaThe trip went very well. Everyone is safe, had a great time and did a lot of serving. We did check-ups for over 110 people, left a room full of medicine for future help, refurbished a building to be a medical clinic and resurfaced the floor of a boys dormitory. We enjoyed a couple of safari days and got to see the Wildebeest crossing the Mara River, one of the natural wonders of the world and the last large mammal migration on earth! All in all and excellent trip for everyone.

The whole team has arrived and we've enjoyed our first day together. I delivered the message at two services this morning and some of our team helped lead the teen Sunday School time. We visited the orphans and they sang for us. After lunch we visited the Nairobi National Museum then came back for dinner, team meeting and medicine sorting.

Made final preparations today at Jehovah Jireh Orphanage, meeting with the manager, Florence, and surveying the project site. Tomorrow it's church followed by a visit to the orphanage, a city tour and an evening of sorting medications and planning for Monday's first day of work. Praying for all of you as Irene strafes the East Coast. In the attached pictures you'll see Debbie Bornholdt, my co-leader, reading to orphans at Jehovah Jireh and Daniel and me with Florence outside her office. Please keep us in your prayers.

Spent the day in Kitui where I visited with Reverend J.V. Mule the Bishop of Kitui, assisted with the repair of a vehicle for the diocese, surveyed the project site and purchased some initial materials. We then drove the three hours back in time to greet early arrivals. Four team members came in tonight. We all got to the guest house by about 10:45 p.m. It's almost 11:30 now and I'm just getting back to my room. Tomorrow it's a visit to the orphanage and time to work on my message for Sunday. I'm speaking at St. Catherine's Church at both the English and Swahili services.

I'm praying for all of you and the people of North Carolina as Irene bears down on them. May God protect everyone as the storm passes.

Met with a newly formed committee that is charged with taking care of Jehovah Jireh orphanage. Then met the new principal of Carlile College who knows Harry Wendt. Carlile uses Crossways materials in their training curriculum. Then met with the General Secretary of Church Army Africa and talked about the work they've done to plant 120 new churches as 'healing ministries' all around Africa. Great stuff. Had dinner with some of our partners here before my driver brought me back to my room. Tomorrow it's off to Kitui to review the project and get some final supplies before coming back to Nairobi to meet early arriving team members.

Sally Messenger and Dale Hoppensteadt prepare medications for Kenya

Tim Kurth arrives in Nairobi, Kenya today preparing to lead a medical/construction mission team there next week. The team of 16 will provide medical check-ups for orphans and blind children in Nairobi and Kitui over the course of the week. They will also be working on repairing a boys dormitory for the orphans and converting classrooms into a medical clinic for St. Luke's Home for Blind Children. Team members are delivering thousands of dollars' worth of donated medicines that will stock clinics in Kenya. Last Friday team members Lon and Sally Messenger and Dale Hoppensteadt worked with Tim to pack suitcases with medications to be include in checked baggage.

Please keep the team in your prayers. They return to the U.S. on Tuesday, September 6.

LCC staff member Tim Kurth has spoken with a few people interested in taking the two remaining spots on the mission team that will be working in Nairobi and Kitui Kenya from August 26 - September 5. However, as of now openings are still available.

The mission will provide medical clinics for orphans and blind children. The team will be repairing the boys dormitory facilities at the orphanage and installing a tilapia pond at the home for blind children as a sustainable micro business project. Medical professionals are encouraged to consider joining this mission but anyone is welcome.

The cost, excluding airfare, is $2295 and includes lodging, in country transportation, some meals and a two day fly-in safari on the Masai Mara. A portion of the fee also goes toward materials; however additional donations strictly for construction materials are welcome.

Malaria Initiative

Update: LCC received the following email from a Pastor in Ghana who received treatment for Malaria from Dr. Busse during her recently medical mission trip to Ghana. The results have been wonderful!  Below is now another testimony on the value this treatment can bring to the Christian Church - at pennies a dose.  This is all being done to provide the Christian Church another tool to touch lives with mercy and compassion and healing - in the name of Christ.

I am very very happy to write to inform you that your malaria treatment I received in Kumasi when you came to Ghana works well and it is better than any other treatment I have ever received for malaria.  Malaria kills many many children in Ghana as well as adults.  I will be very happy if you can come to Bawku to help us. We are hoping and praying to see you. Ever since I received the treatment I never experience malaria again at all.
