Helping Our Neighbors in Indiana
Volunteer Opportunity: Consider volunteering for a few days and Making A Difference
It's been 22 months since the tri-county area of NW Indiana flooded and 22,000 families were impacted as the result of flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Ike. A tremendous amount of recovery work has been completed but there are still 800 families waiting for assistance. Project LARRI (Lakeshore Area Regional Recovery of Indiana) is seeking volunteers to help with the rebuilding efforts.
House Blessing House restored by volunteers | Join volunteers from Lutheran Church Charities and the NID-LWML who will be providing assistance to our neighbors in Indiana. This is an opportunity to serve that is close in terms of travel time, offers a great deal of flexibility, and is affordable in our struggling economy. Housing is provided at no charge - team members choose how many days they can volunteer.
Plan now to join the team planning to go the week of Sept 12-Sept 18. Projects could include framing, hanging wallboard, mudding the wallboard, painting, sanding and staining woodwork. On the practical side a few people are needed to do the meal prep, grocery shopping and cleaning.

Although it Has Been 18 Months - 800 Families Are Not in Their Homes |
|
|
|
Recently LCC Staff member Dianna Bonfield had the opportunity to visit with Rhonda Carlson, the Volunteer Coordinator of Project LARRI, and to take a tour of one of their newest acquisitions that they are using to house volunteers.
It has been 18 months since the tri-county area of NW Indiana flooded and 22,000 families were impacted or lost their homes. A tremendous amount of recovery work has been completed but there are still 800 families waiting to get back into their homes. Project LARRI (Lakeshore Area Regional Recovery of Indiana) is in need of volunteers to help with the recovery efforts. They have five facilities that can house up to 150 volunteers, one being a beach house on Lake Michigan that can house 30 volunteers. The months of April and May still have a few openings where they can house volunteers. In June and July, all of the housing is filled to capacity; however, they can still use volunteers who would be able to come in and work for the day.
For the month of August they have a few groups who are coming in. Rhonda was saying that the following openings are still available:
- week of Aug 8th - one house can accommodate 22 volunteers
- week of Aug. 15th - one house can accommodate 22 volunteers
- week of Aug. 22nd - they have two houses open and can accommodate 44 volunteers
- week of Aug. 29th - all of the houses are open and they can house 150 volunteers

|
|
|
LCC just received a request for local Indiana volunteers and volunteer teams
from all over to assist with disaster cleanup and rebuilding over this
summer and fall. If you are a skilled or unskilled volunteer they need your
help. If you're unemployed, need a lift in spirits and have the time and
skills consider helping out others who have lost everything.

Help Houston Heal!
Ike Victims in Need of Items to get back to living again.
At Lutheran Inter-City Network Coalition, we do case management of our clients
that are Hurricane Ike victims to assure they are getting entirely healed. We
take this holistic approach, because sometimes, it is not just the homes that
were damaged by Ike, it is their faith as well. We do not just want to put a
band aid on the situation; we want to heal the entire person. Sometimes this is
getting the home fixed and getting spiritual counseling. Other times, it means
doing both of those and helping the family acquire items that lead to a healthy
whole life again. These are items that most of us take for granted. Below you
will see a list of those items we so desperately need for this healing to
happen. If you replaced something in the home, give us the old one! If you had a
certain amount of money set aside for missions, use it for missions in your
city.
This is the list of needs:
- 26 Twin beds
- 9 Full beds
- 15 Queen Beds

- 7 Stoves
