Haiti Earthquake

On Friday afternoon, August 27th and Monday morning, August 30th, LCC volunteers did a stellar job of loading the containers for Haiti in less than an hour and a half.
Thank you to all the donors whose donations will make a difference in the lives of the people of Haiti.
On Thursdays and Fridays throughout the summer small teams ranging from 2 to 15 worked at the warehouse transporting, sorting, boxing, and palletizing donations getting ready for the day when we could ship the donations to Haiti. Our crew of 48 LCC volunteers logged over 4,000 hours preparing the donations. Over the past Friday and Monday the volunteers loaded two containers with 2,209 boxes and items with a total weight of 37,920 lbs. These containers included some special items, shoes, medical supplies, and medical equipment for the clinic and hospitals and the Medical Mercy teams, tools to be used in the Building Homes and Hope For Haiti Project, and lastly a special donation of liturgical resources for our Churches in Haiti.
Thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard and made this possible. LCC would not be the ministry we are or do the things we do without your faithful service. You are Lutheran Church Charities!
A special thank you to Ace Relocation Systems and their staff who allowed us to use their facility for the summer months. We also want to thank Orphan Grain Train who has been partnering with us and the LCMS to transport your donations to Haiti where they will be given out through our Lutheran Churches who are ministering in Jesus' name to the hurting people of Haiti. For all of us involved it was amazing to see God at work through his people!

LCC staff members Tim Hetzner and Dona Martin returned from Haiti on Sunday night. While there they continued the ongoing plans for Building Homes and Hope for Haiti. On Saturday, September 4th, they delivered over 700 pairs of shoes to those living in the tent cities.

We are nearing the end of the line on the packing of the Haiti containers. Yesterday LCC volunteers Gary Kessler and John Peterson drove down to the Orphan Grain Train/Indiana Div. Warehouse to bring back a truckload of boxes for the containers. On Monday we received five more corporate donations of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches and canes, enough to fill LCC's 15 passenger cargo van. We also had two other vehicles deliver bag mats, clothing, and walkers and crutches.
On Friday, August 27th, we are scheduled to have one container dropped at 10AM in the morning and the second container at 1:30 PM. We have only two hours to hand load the container. For every hour after that we are accessed $170 charge . Because it is hot in the containers we would like to have two crews of four people who can lift at least 50 lb. or more. The plan is to have a crew of four working for 20 to 40 minutes then they would switch and the other crew would work inside the container while the first crew rests and works in the warehouse. They would rest and switch again until the container is filled. At 1:30 the second container will be delivered and we will repeat the process again.
If you can help us either or both days, for the whole day or for the morning or afternoon, please call Dianna Bonfield on her cell phone 847-287-6624 or email

Request from Sue Gross, The Haitian Lutheran Mission Project
This is Verlande. She is a Haiti earthquake victim and one of the many refugees that fled to Jeremie. Pastor Isaac has been ministering to her. Some of us went to her home when we were in Jeremie last March and prayed with her. Both of her legs were broken in the earthquake and much of the delay in her healing is due to her poor nutrition. Her family has not been able to purchase the medications and foods she needs to heal properly. Pastor Isaac tells us her health is very poor now and she is being taken to the hospital. The Haitian Lutheran Mission Project has helped her in the past but our funds for this situation are very limited. About $1,000 is needed for Verlande's surgery, medication and food. If anyone would like to make a donation for medicines and special food needs we will be sure to get them to Verlande and others like her.

The donations from the last collection site, Zion Lutheran Church in Grant Park, will be picked up this Friday. To date the 34 warehouse volunteers have spent 400+ hours getting the donations ready to ship to Haiti. They have finished 6 pallets of clothing and 8 pallets of medical supplies, tools, hygiene products, school supplies and shoes. There are still 900 boxes to be sorted and readied for loading on the shipping containers. The next scheduled work days at the warehouse will be July 22nd and 23rd. If you are interested in volunteering to work at the warehouse please contact Dianna Bonfield at

The response to Tim's appeal for shoes for the children in the tent cities in Haiti has been tremendous. Thank you to everyone who has already donated. Your generous donations have put shoes on the feet of so many children, but there are many more who are still barefoot and need our help.
Shoes are still available for purchase in Haiti and are desperately needed to protect the children from disease. Please contribute now if you are moved to help! Thank you for your compassion for these children.
Update: More shoes were delivered to the children in the tent cities in Jacmel, Leogone, and Thomassique last week:

Hundreds of barefoot children are eagerly waiting in line for shoes that will help protect them against infection and disease caused by walking in mud and other hazardous materials in the aftermath of the earthquake.
|
A Haitian child smiles joyously as he is covered in new shoes purchased by your donations! These shoes produced more smiles when they were distributed to other children in need.

The day after the appeal went out, Rev Marky Kessa, President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti, purchases shoes for the children in the tent cities.

Tim Hetzner with the children in a tent city in Jacmel, Haiti

May 19th - I am in Haiti as I write this and have just returned from one of the camp cities in Jacmel, Haiti.
This is just one of many tent cities in just this town where we are working today. There are over 10,000 people here in tents, over 30% are small children WITHOUT SHOES.
Because of the filthy conditions in the camps and the lack of shoes for the children, many children are getting infections and worms and dying! I know we are collecting shoes to send but shoes are needed NOW.
I have worked out a deal to get the shoes (plastic ones) for about $2.30 US dollars a pair. I am giving all the cash I have with me to help in one of the camps with about 500 children. Can you help me with the others?
We are working through First Lutheran Church of Jacmel. Please contribute now if you are moved to help! Thank you for your compassion for these children. Your donation will put a pair of shoes on a child within 24 hrs of your donation. I leave this area at 6AM tomorrow and will be in Port Au Prince tomorrow to buy more shoes that will be sent back to Jacmel.
