Sewing Machines needed to Train Pastor Isaac's Orphans in Haiti so they can Work and Support Themselves! Print E-mail

Request From Sue Gross, Haiti Lutheran Mission Project

On our last visit to Haiti we became aware that some of the Orphans we still remember as small children are growing quickly. Some of them will soon be out on their own trying to make a living and supporting their own families. We are concerned that even though they have an education, jobs are in very short supply and it will be difficult for them to survive.

Next summer we hope to restart sewing classes so that those ready to leave the orphanage will be able to support themselves by making items that we will bring back to the States to sell. For this project to start we are asking for donations of portable sewing machines. We can send these machines on the bus when we ship it and it will not cost any extra freight. Please consider dusting off that machine you no longer use and donating it to those who will put it to good use.

If you have a machine to donate please contact LCC at 866-455-6466 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Help the Haitian Orphans NOW-Donations Needed for Bunk Beds Print E-mail

Request from Sue Gross, Lutheran Mission Project

Friends of Haiti,

I am often asked how a small congregation can be part of the Haiti Ministry without making a monthly commitment of support. Well here it is.....................

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Richton Park, along with the Richton Park Community, bought a used school bus which we will use as a shipping container to send large items to Pastor Isaac in Haiti. This is a rare opportunity for us to have such a large space to ship needed items to Haiti so we decided to take advantage of it by shipping the much needed BUNKBEDS that the children will use when the addition on Pastor's house is finished next year.

We found white pine bunk beds at IKEA for $159.00 each. The mattresses are extra and they have 20 available right now if we want them. We do not have to pay tax and we will pick them up ourselves. So if we can get 20 congregations to donate $300.00 we will have enough beds for the 30 orphans and the guest room where mission teams will stay in the future.

We would like to thank Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Richton Park Community for the FEST they sponsored last Saturday. All proceeds went to pay for the cost of shipping the bus to Haiti. Please consider a donation for this cause. These children sleep on a concrete floor in Pastor's home right now. These children have never had a bed to sleep in! Can you imagine the excitement when they get to sleep in their very own bed for the first time? Please help make this happen NOW. If the bus leaves before we can raise the money for the beds it will be too costly for us to ship them.

Tim Hetzner Returns from Haiti Print E-mail
Greetings in Christ. I just finished my ??? trip to Haiti - too many to count. Progress is being made daily to help the thousands of needy families still living in tents. Work continues to get them into temporary homes and then into permanent housing. The guest house to facilitate volunteers is near completion. A church, which will primarily serve those who are currently living in tents and will be moving into the LCMS Building Homes and Hope in Haiti project homes, is near 100% completion! A village is being developed with a school still on the docket to be built. This is all in Jeremie.

Our joint work with LCMS World Relief and Human Care and the ELCH (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haiti) continues to Make a Difference. A seminary is halfway completed to help supply the growing need for pastors in Haiti. Our Lutheran Churches in Haiti are literally busting at the seams! A Difference is Being Made in God's Kingdom - all because of your support to LCC, LCMS World Relief and Human Care, and ELCH and the so many others! Thank you for your continual support.

I am exhausted now (less than a few hours since returning) but will share more on the LCC Website and Facebook page about the ELCH Convention and Mercy work taking place, so watch for more pictures and updates!

Haiti ESL Update - July 13, 2011 Print E-mail
College students Sofie Martin from Immanuel Lutheran Palatine, Illinois and Jacob Deal from Trinity Lutheran Toledo, Ohio hit the ground running since they arrived in Haiti on June 21st. The first week was spent preparing classroom materials and technology aids for the ESL classes which began Monday July 11th. Originally scheduled to start on July 4th, class was postponed a week as Sofie and Jacob were asked by Pastor Markey Kessa to attend and document a Pastor's Conference for the Evangelical Church of Haiti led by Reverend Glenn Merritt of LCMS World Relief and Human Care.

Pastor Kessa and his wife, Sydney, opened the ESL classes with Sofie and Jacob. Due to the change in schedule, Sofie and Jacob will now be returning one week later. In between setting up for classes and attending the conference Sofie had written in her blog:

Jake and I had the opportunity to work with a young girl from the church named Nadia, she is currently in nursing school and had some homework in English that she needed help completing. After around 5 hours, we helped her complete the task. It was hard but God gave us the strength to follow through. After we were finished she told us that she couldn't put in words how thankful she was for us helping her. That was the greatest reward of all; the relief of knowing we made a difference was all we needed.
Please continue to keep them in your prayers as they are Making A Difference in Haiti. You can also support their additional week in Haiti by donating through the following link:

Families Move out of Tent Cities into Homes Print E-mail
Last week a team from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Napoleon, Ohio, led by Jackie Rychel, helped make a vision into reality as they moved 20 families from a tent city in a soccer field to houses near the Lutheran Village in Jacmel, Haiti. The UN helped with the relocation by providing trucks and transportation for the families. These homes are part of the Building Homes and Hope in Haiti project which partners LCMS World Relief and Human Care and Lutheran Church Charities.
