The following is our latest report from Haiti from Rev Glenn Merritt, Disaster Response Director for LCMS World Relief and Human Care - whom LCC works in partnership with:

Permanent housing is desperately needed! With thousands of people living in tents and this being the rain and storm season in Haiti - those living in tents will be once again displaced! There are 100 homes ready for shipment, stacked and secured at the assembly location in Houston. There are another 30-40 homes ready to be picked up in Denver and moved to Houston.

Pres. Kessa has asked that containers be filled with good sorted clean clothes, tools, food and water. Also, there is a desperate need for children's shoes and sandals even the little plastic or rubber ones. The manager of one refugee camp with over 660 children told me that kids are sick and dying every day simply because they do not have shoes.Cuts on their feet are becoming infected and worms are entering their bodies through the cuts. Together, I know we can meet this need for shoes and simple topical antibiotics.

MudslidesI just returned from my 5th visit to Haiti and in many ways the situation is more drastic than right after the earthquake. Desperation and despair are beginning to set in especially with the rainy season. I saw with my own eyes children suffering and dying, adults crying and weeping, men and boys willing to do anything for a few dollars or some food.

I also saw materials and goods that OGT (Orphan Grain Train) shipped being used and distributed, some of which LCC provided. They need more tools (shovels, picks, hammers, screw drivers, etc) to continue rebuilding as well as supplies like nails and screws. Also needed are 5 gallon pails and gas cans. LCMS World Relief and Human Care is willing to partner with OGT and LCC. Together we can meet the need. LCC and OGT are the very best partners we could ask for. Both of you can mobilized people to mercy in a moment's notice. Thank you!

I returned from Haiti early in the morning this past Sunday. People have asked me to share my thoughts about the trip. This is hard to do as my head is still spinning from the trip and I keep seeing the many faces of those in need in Haiti - and the needs are so great! I am still thinking about what is the best approach to the vast needs amongst our churches in Haiti. I am waiting on some additional information from Pastor Marky Kessa - President of the Lutheran Church in Haiti (ELCH).

So let me share some random thoughts about the trip....

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Rev. Dr. Doris Jean Louis Print E-mail

Saturday, March 13th -

Today we received the following email from Rev. Glenn F. Merritt, Director of Disaster Response, LCMS World Relief & Human Care:

Rev. Gregory S. Walton, President, The Florida-Georgia District, LCMS writes:

Lenten greetings to you all as we begin those final weeks of this season that truly points us to the hope we have within us, the risen Lord Jesus!

The Psalmist wrote, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." Psalm 116:15

This morning we learned of the murder of Pastor Doris Jean Louis, the father of Lutheranism in Haiti, truly one of God's saints. Apparently as he was entering his residence last night he was attacked by some men and brutally murdered. While we have no details and can't comprehend how this could happen, God's people cry out in anguish for this dear soul. We pray that God's mercy, comfort and peace would surround his family, the Lutheran community in Haiti, and the whole nation still embroiled in such difficulty following the devastating earthquakes.

In the grace and mercy of God, I would request that Pastor Louis' family be lifted in prayer in your worship service tomorrow, that you would continue to pray for the Lutheran community in Haiti, and continue to pray for this nation. The Apostle Paul wrote of the Church being like a human body, and said, "that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." 1 Cor. 12:25-27

On Monday morning LCC received a call from Deaconess Intern Cindy Lumley, the Assistant Director of Deaconess Studies at Fort Wayne Seminary. She asked if LCC had another shipment of supplies for Haiti going out soon. The Deaconess Students at the Seminary had coordinated a collection. Donations were brought in by the Seminary students and faculty as well as the wider Fort Wayne Community. They collected enough items from the collection list to fill eight pallets. This week these pallets will be shipped by JAT of Fort Wayne Indiana, free of charge, to the collection site at Risen Christ Lutheran Church in Fairport, New York. Once there it will be added to the sea container and shipped with the New York collection to Port Au Prince.

Local Lutheran group sends Haiti donations in truck loads

February 4, 2010

In what they call one of the largest Chicago-area Haiti relief efforts, Lutheran Church Charities officials collected an estimated $1 million in donations from 22 area churches.

But what always overwhelms Tim Hetzner, the group's president, is "the outpouring of people and the love and compassion of the volunteers."

The effort, in partnership with Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod's World Relief/Human Care, was launched with an e-mail blast. Both groups recruited more than 200 volunteers to work at an Itasca warehouse for three shifts per day this week to help sort and pack donations.

New Tax Break for Contributions to Haiti Earthquake Relief Print E-mail
tzxes

On January 22, 2010, legislation was passed that allows certain 2010 contributions for Haiti earthquake relief to be deducted on your 2009 tax return instead of your 2010 return. This means you can receive an immediate tax benefit, rather than having to wait until you file next year's return. Certain requirements apply.

Below is the link to the IRS website which lists the requirements. Ask your tax advisor for additional details.

Your Donations Are Making a Difference: Chicago Pastor Loses Six Family Members in the Earthquake Print E-mail

Rev. Bingue and Tim HetznerRev. Bingue, a native of Haiti, is a Lutheran Pastor ministering to Haitian immigrants in the Chicago area

Your donations are helping to send LCMS Pastor Bingue, Bethesda Lutheran in Chicago, to his home area in Haiti.  He will carry with him LCC-collected supplies.  He will stay to help serve and rebuild lives!!

Thank you for Making A Difference.

Letter from Rev. Bingue

Grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ,

As I spoke to you concerning the container to send to Haiti I would like to serve about six suburbs from Port-au-Prince such as Carrefour, Gressier, Leogane, Carrefour dufort, Grand Goave and Petit Goave. Those are the areas that are heavily affected by the earthquaque. So far about four hundred people are already dead. Mostly all the people in this area do not have place to sleep, they are in the streets. Things that are mostly needed are medicine, food, clothes, water and money. Whatever we can do to help these people will be very appreciated. All the major facilities have collapsed, the parliament, the tax office, schools, hospitals, the cathedral. Now, concerning the town of Leogane you could literally play soccer there, there is no house standing. I am planning on leaving on the 5th of February or sooner to start the process of helping them to rebuild Haiti.
Thank you for your concern,

Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Jean Andre Gerard Bingue

If your group is currently making Mats and would like to donate them please contact LCC at 866-455-6466 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
